Canada Dental Care Plan (CDCP) Eligibility & Benefit Calculator

🦷 2026 Benefit Update: The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is now fully operational for all eligible residents. If your adjusted family net income is below $90,000 and you do not have access to private dental insurance, the government will cover a significant portion of your dental costs. Use our calculator to see your specific coverage percentage and estimated co-payment fees.

Dental health is a vital part of overall well-being, yet for years, millions of Canadians skipped the dentist due to high costs. The new federal Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) changes that by providing direct dental coverage to uninsured Canadians. However, the plan isn’t a “one-size-fits-all” freebie. Depending on your income, you may still be responsible for a “co-payment” (a percentage of the bill you pay out of pocket). Our Canada Dental Benefit Calculator helps you understand exactly where you stand based on the latest 2026 income thresholds.

How to Determine Your Dental Coverage

Don’t book your appointment until you’ve checked your eligibility. Follow these steps to calculate your benefit:

  1. Enter Your Adjusted Family Net Income (AFNI): This is the amount found on Line 23600 of your (and your spouse’s) latest tax return.
  2. Verify Insurance Status: To qualify, you must NOT have access to any form of private dental insurance (through work, school, or a professional organization).
  3. Calculate Your Co-Payment: If your income is under $70k, you are 100% covered. Between $70k-$80k, you pay a 40% co-payment. Between $80k-$90k, you pay a 60% co-payment.
  4. Check Service Coverage: Ensure your dentist is a “participating provider” with Sun Life, the official administrator of the CDCP.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Is the dental plan completely free for everyone?
No. Only families with an adjusted net income of less than $70,000 receive 100% coverage (based on the CDCP fee guide). If your family income is between $70,000 and $89,999, you will be required to pay a portion of the bill (a co-payment) directly to the dentist. Furthermore, if your dentist charges more than the official CDCP fee guide, you must pay the difference.
2. What happens if I already have dental insurance through my job?
If you have access to any private dental insurance, you are not eligible for the CDCP, even if that insurance is expensive or doesn’t cover much. The government designed this plan specifically for those who have zero access to dental benefits. Opting out of your employer’s plan just to join the CDCP is generally not permitted.
3. What dental services are actually covered by the CDCP?
The plan covers a wide range of “standard” services, including cleanings, exams, X-rays, fillings, extractions, and root canals. Some complex procedures, like full dentures or oral surgery, may require “pre-authorization” from Sun Life before the work can begin. Purely cosmetic procedures like teeth whitening are not covered.
4. Do I need to apply every year for the dental benefit?
Yes. Your eligibility is re-verified every year based on your latest tax filing. This ensures that if your income increases above the $90,000 threshold, the benefit is redirected to those who still qualify. It is vital that you file your taxes on time every year to remain in the program.
5. Can I go to any dentist with this plan?
You can go to any dental provider (dentist, hygienist, or denturist) who has agreed to participate in the CDCP and bill Sun Life directly. When booking your appointment, always ask: “Are you a participating provider under the Canadian Dental Care Plan?”
